Puerto Galera Kay Ganda

September 15-16, 2012
International Coastal Cleanup (ICC)
Puerto Galera, Oriental Mindoro

The UP Marine Biological Society (UP MBS), yearly organizes its own ICC. This year they go back to Puerto Galera to monitor the Clam Garden and to plan mangroves.

Puerto Galera, Kay Ganda!
80 participants from Manila join this big event together with 400 students from Puerto Galera. The activity began with the cleanup of coastal areas in Muelle Cove, Hondura Bay and Balete Bay. Each dive group was assigned to collect specific trash and tally on the data card. Its purpose is to identify the kinds of trash that are not properly disposed.

Arts and craft
Some of the trash collected were used to create artsy stuff. The kids definitely have creative juices! The  made whale out of bottle, crocodile out of egg trays, people out of bottle and newspapers.

Mangrove Planting
In the afternoon, participants planted mangroves. Mangroves not only help in preventing soil erosion but also act as a catalyst in reclaiming land from seas.Mangrove forests and estuaries are the breeding and nursery grounds for a number of marine organisms including the commercially important shrimp, crab and fish species. Hence, loss of mangroves not only affects us indirectly but there are direct economic repercussions through loss of fishing industry (source).

Reggae Night
After the day's work, everyone deserved a party! Two free cocktail drinks by Coco Beach Island Resort. There were also local bands who livened up the night and an exhibition of fire dancers!

Dive
The next morning, it was time to dive! First dive spot was choppy and the strong current prevented us from diving. We transferred to another spot and yesss the site was priceless. Colorful and very nice!

Raffle
We had a number of cool sponsors so to end the awesome activity we gave away prizes to lucky participants. Thank you Giordano Philippines, Fluidsurf, Lagu, Pandemanila, Click the City, Coco Beach Island Resort, CDO, and ANC.
