Surf 1 (2011)
Location: Baler, Aurora
Jan 21-23, 2011
My first surf trip for the year 2011! Yeah!! For the first time I was able to load the 1am bus trip to Baler. It was the fastest trip ever. It took us only 6 hours travel time. By 7am were already in the beautiful town of Baler.
We pitched Jame's over sized tent had our breakfast then off to surf!! Weeee. The weather was perfect, sunny and not windy at all. The waves were pumping every where. Readied my rashguard and Denden.
For the whole three days of stay we did nothing but surf, sleep, EAT, drink, sleep... and the cycle goes on. On our first night, I treated them with some beer! Early birthday celebration. Yeahay! What a perfect way to pre-celebrate my birthday. Beach life. You hear the sounds of the waves, feel the cold wind, and just forget all the busyness the city brings.
Saturday, we went to Cemento Cobra Reef Point to watch the Cemento Pipe Master Challenge. It was a struggle going to the point. 20min tricycle ride from Sabang beach and then walk where water was almost knee high and where mangroves were planted.
Competition was man to man. We were rooting for Greggie Dela Torre. Woah! Waves there were extremely huge. Tube, barrel. Amazing to watch the local surfers play. And yes Greggie did very well. He was the over all champion by the way. Just so you have an idea of the waves in Cemento, here's one taken by Charles Ritual.
After watching the comp, we were all inspired and ready to hit the line up again. Waves in the afternoon was a bit wild and choppy as compared to morning waves. I didn't last for an hour.
Last day was my happiest surf day! I got to ride many waves. Long rides plus "level two waves" as Kuya Adi said. Hahaha. Early morning is the best time to surf, around 6-9am. Waves in the morning are calm and glassy. Easy to paddle out. There were a lot of locals in the line up and they were all so supportive, giving and helpful! Hahha pinagbibigyan talaga kami sa waves. Sinasabihan pa kami kung anong waves ok kunin at tinuturo kung san kami dapat pumwesto. I'm so happy. I learned a lot of surfing tips from them.
Can't wait to go back! February again surf's up!
